The Sub-Zero Standard

Sub-Zero refrigeration heritage since 1945.

Sub-Zero traces its history to engineer Westye F. Bakke in Madison, Wisconsin. Bakke built an early freestanding freezer prototype in 1943, and the Sub-Zero Freezer Company was formally established in Madison in 1945. In 1955, Sub-Zero introduced Dual Refrigeration®, originally known as Tu-Temp, using separate refrigeration systems for refrigerator and freezer compartments. Westye Bakke also worked on custom refrigeration solutions associated with architect Frank Lloyd Wright during the company's early years.

Sub-Zero is a family-owned U.S. appliance company based in Wisconsin, with manufacturing operations in Wisconsin and additional U.S. facilities. Sub-Zero states that its appliances are designed and tested for at least 20 years of everyday use. Actual appliance life depends on installation, use, maintenance, environment and the individual appliance.

Appliance Crew is an independent appliance repair company. Our technicians are experienced with Sub-Zero refrigeration, freezing, wine-storage, undercounter and dedicated ice-making appliances, and manufacturer technical resources may be consulted when appropriate for the specific model.

What Makes Sub-Zero Different

  • Dual Refrigeration®
Separate refrigeration systems for refrigerator and freezer compartments to maintain different temperature and humidity conditions and reduce air exchange between them. Exact compressor, evaporator, fan and control architecture varies by model and generation.
  • Magnetic Door Seals
Applicable Sub-Zero appliances use magnetic door seals designed to help retain cold air. Door and gasket architecture varies by model.
  • Split Climate® Intelligent Cooling
Current Classic and Designer refrigeration use Split Climate® intelligent cooling on applicable models to optimize refrigerator temperature using model-specific variable-speed refrigeration and airflow control.
  • Air Purification
Applicable Classic, Designer and current PRO refrigeration use an air purification system based on technology originally developed for NASA, designed to reduce ethylene and odor. All-freezer and wine-storage units do not use this system, and many older 600 and 700 Series models did not include it.
  • ClearSight® LED Lighting
Applicable current Classic and Designer products use ClearSight® LED lighting designed to illuminate shelves and drawers while reducing interior shadows. Insulation and cabinet construction vary by product family and model.

Common Sub-Zero Service Requests

Common Sub-Zero service requests.

Tell us which of these sounds closest to what the appliance is doing. Appliance Crew evaluates the reported problem before recommending repair work.

01

Refrigerator & Freezer Concerns

Not maintaining temperature, warming, unusual operation, excessive frost or condensation, door concerns, ice-making or water symptoms, displayed alerts or controls not responding. If the refrigerator is warming, keep unnecessary door openings to a minimum and call 561.933.9955 to check the earliest available appointment. See freezer repair.

02

Refrigeration-System Concerns

Cooling performance, unusual cycling, abnormal operational noise or temperature concerns may involve different refrigeration-system components depending on model. The appliance must be evaluated before the failed component can be identified.

03

Ice-Making Concerns

Not producing ice as expected, reduced production, unusual ice, changes in ice quality, dispensing concerns, water or drainage symptoms, buildup, unusual noise or displayed alerts. For an ice maker built into a refrigerator or freezer see ice maker repair; for a dedicated undercounter ice machine see free-standing ice maker repair.

04

Display & Control Concerns

Displayed error messages, controls not responding, unexpected operation or intermittent electronic behavior can be evaluated as part of appliance diagnosis.

05

Door & Seal Concerns

Door not closing correctly, gasket damage, condensation around the opening, unusual resistance or frost buildup may require evaluation of the door, seal, hinge, installation or other conditions.

06

Water & Drainage Concerns

Water pooling, leaking, ice accumulation, dispenser concerns or drainage symptoms may have different causes depending on the exact model and installation. Water supply and drainage requirements also vary by exact ice-machine model, and current Designer models include pump and non-pump configurations.

Current And Earlier Sub-Zero Generations

Current and earlier Sub-Zero generations.

Appliance Crew services a wide range of current and earlier Sub-Zero refrigeration products. Exact serviceability is confirmed from the model, appliance condition and replacement-parts availability.

Earlier Generations

Earlier Sub-Zero Generations

Sub-Zero has produced many earlier built-in and integrated refrigeration generations, including 500, 600, 700, BI, IT, IC, ID, IW and older UC model families. Built-In was renamed Classic and Integrated was renamed Designer in 2019. These installed appliances may still be serviceable depending on the exact model, condition and replacement-parts availability.

Temperature Control

Cooling & Control Architecture

Sub-Zero refrigeration uses model-specific electronic controls, sensors, refrigeration systems and airflow management to maintain selected temperatures. Current Classic and Designer products include newer intelligent cooling technology, while earlier generations use different control architectures.

Panel-Ready

Panel-Ready & Integrated Refrigeration

Many Sub-Zero Designer, Classic, wine-storage and undercounter products can use custom exterior panels or flush-inset installations depending on model. When appliance access is required, surrounding finished surfaces and decorative panels are handled with care.

Wine Preservation

Independent Wine Temperature Zones

Current wine-storage products use model-specific temperature-zone configurations, and many current full-height wine models provide two independent wine-storage zones. On a model that also includes refrigerator drawers, the drawer is an additional refrigeration zone rather than a third wine-storage zone. Applicable products use UV-resistant glass, smooth-glide shelving and model-specific refrigeration design that help minimize unnecessary bottle disturbance.

Drawers

Sub-Zero Drawer Refrigeration

Sub-Zero has produced refrigerator drawers, freezer drawers, combination drawers and outdoor-rated drawer products across current and earlier Designer product generations. Exact width, control architecture, ice-making capability and outdoor rating vary by model.

Outdoor

Sub-Zero Outdoor Refrigeration

Selected Sub-Zero undercounter refrigerator and drawer configurations are specifically rated for outdoor installation. Environmental ratings, construction, electrical requirements and installation conditions vary by exact model. Concerns may include temperature, unusual operation, condensation, door or drawer issues, ice-making on applicable products or controls not responding.

Why Model-Specific Service Matters

Why model-specific service matters.

Cooling symptoms can have different causes depending on the exact Sub-Zero model and refrigeration architecture. Diagnosis determines the cause.

Multiple Sub-Zero Generations

Sub-Zero refrigeration spans current Classic, Designer and PRO products along with many earlier 500, 600, 700, BI, IT, IC, ID, IW and other generations. Exact model identification helps determine the appropriate technical information.

Parts Sourced For The Specific Repair

Replacement parts are sourced based on the exact model, repair requirements and current availability in the United States.

Different Refrigeration Architectures

Refrigerator/freezer combinations, all-refrigerator units, freezer columns, wine storage, undercounter appliances and dedicated ice makers use different cooling and control configurations.

Model & Serial Information

The model and serial number help identify the exact Sub-Zero product, generation, configuration and available replacement-part options.

Built-In Installations

Many Sub-Zero appliances are integrated into cabinetry or installed with decorative panels. Finished surfaces and surrounding cabinetry are handled with care when appliance access is required.

Frequently Asked

Sub-Zero repair questions.

Answers to what owners ask most when a Sub-Zero appliance needs service.

Manufacturer warranty coverage and authorization requirements are determined by Sub-Zero. Appliance Crew is an independent appliance repair company and does not represent itself as a Sub-Zero Factory Certified or authorized service provider. If the appliance may still be covered by a manufacturer warranty, contact Sub-Zero directly to confirm the applicable service requirements before booking independent repair.

Sub-Zero refrigeration is often installed alongside Wolf cooking, Cove dishwashers and appliances from other premium manufacturers. Appliance Crew works with a wide range of appliance brands within our service scope. Tell us which appliances need attention when booking so each appliance can be reviewed appropriately.
Possibly. Sub-Zero has produced many refrigeration and wine-storage generations since 1945, including 500, 600, 700, BI, IT, IC, ID, IW, 400 Series wine storage and older UC undercounter appliances. Serviceability depends on the exact model, condition and whether the required replacement parts can still be sourced in the United States, and parts availability for discontinued models depends on the exact component and current U.S. supply. Send us the model and serial information and we will help confirm whether it falls within our service scope.
After diagnosis, Appliance Crew can explain the repair required and the quoted cost. The decision to repair or replace depends on factors such as the appliance age, condition, required parts, repair cost and your plans for the kitchen.
